looking for an identity; and finding it in Him

Identity: the distinguishing character or personality of an individual.

We long for this assurance in our lives, to know exactly who we are and grasp whatever purpose we individually receive as someone on this earth. Often, we fall short of this confidence. You meet someone that is struggling in grand decisions that ultimately “define” them as a certain type of person. Effectively that decision doesn’t come so easy anymore, it’s now tangled and attached with fear of what that identity will be and how the world will look at you. It’s a crippling moment. In an instant, we are convinced that we are locked in with this “person” the world has decided we are- chained to that character without a key to change. I have felt the breath of my life fall from my lungs in a time of absolute darkness- I looked around and saw the bondage of who I had become in the eyes of family and friends, and ran miles to try to find my way out.

Genesis 1:27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

I ran in place for what felt like years, going nowhere, understanding nothing but the torment of isolation; to finally finding my place in this life. My identity is in Christ. I found a purpose for the breaths I take and the actions I make, all for the glory of His name. At a final time of complete loneliness, I looked over and found myself embraced and carried by Jesus. Suddenly, I wasn’t alone.

I have had so many alike conversations of those that are searching and desperately longing for knowing why they are here and what for. To me, it’s simple. God created me to love Him, to desire Him, and to choose Him. He knows me intimately. I’ve recently been asked “what’s the point?” And I counter with, “why not?”

What is the harm in believing in God when your alternative is wandering around this life without any confidence of your existence. In my case, I choose the Father.  In Him I have undeniable love, unbelievable grace, unquestionable guidance, and 100% confidence in who I am. My identity will always be in Him, rather than the opinions of man. Being able to change that perspective has altered the way I live my life for the better. Because I strive to walk in His shoes, instead of following in those around me. I am free of that judgement, let go of stereotypes, and no longer bound by my mistakes.

1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light
